Notes on Blindness + Q&A

Peter Middleton-James Spinney, 2016, UK, 90′. Certificate: U

Our new season begins with the screening of the critically acclaimed British dramatised documentary, “Notes on Blindness”, to be followed by a Q&A with the two filmmakers, Peter Middleton and James Spinney (tbc)!

Best Documentary winner at the British Independent Film Awards and nominated for three BAFTAs (Outstanding British Film of the Year, Best Documentary, Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer) in 2016, the film uses the original audio cassette recordings of writer and  theology professor, John Hull who, in 1983, became blind and decided to keep a record, an audio diary, of his and his family’s experiences.

The film will be screened with a “Heightened Soundtrack” so that audiences with visual impairments can enjoy it without the need of an audio description.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ “Who knew that a tale of blindness could be so visionary and so beautifully photographed on screen?” Kate Muir, www.thetimes.co.uk
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ “Hull’s is a one-off story. It’s entirely appropriate that he’s got a one-off documentary treatment that pushes the form. This is a beautiful, accessible and thoughtful work of art.” Charlie Phillips, www.theguardian.com
