Zombieland

Zombieland

Ruben Fleischer, 2009, USA, Colour, 88 mins, Certificate: 15

What do you get when 3 sassy Oscar nominees and 1 equally sassy Oscar winner meet, join forces and try to find their way home, any home, in a zombie infested, post-apocalyptic America? A bloody brilliant horror comedy/road movie, that’s what.

Oscar nominated Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”) is Colombus, the shy student who attempts to get to his parents in Ohio. Thrice Oscar nominated Woody Harrelson (“The People Vs. Larry Flynt”, “The Messenger”, “Three Billboard Outside Of Ebbing Missouri”) is Talahassee, the trigger-happy, tough guy who endeavours to get his hands on the last Twinkie (long story). And Oscar nominated Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine” herself) along with the Oscar winner, ever amazing, Emma Stone (“La La Land”, “The Favourite”) are the two sisters, Little Rock and Wichita, who try to get to a reputedly zombie-free amusement park. When they all bump into each other, blood, guts and unrelenting hilarity ensue.

Add to the above an insane and insanely funny guest appearance by another sassy and absolute cult Oscar nominee (I won’t spoil the surprise!), as well as the fact that the film’s hugely anticipated sequel, “Zombieland: Double Tap“, will be in cinemas at the same time (premiering only a few days earlier), and you can have the perfect Halloween night out!

So this 31st of October, simply show up at our screening and… blow your brains out laughing.

Reviews:

“The ghouls who, after an out-of-control virus hits planet Earth, have overrun the world in this smartly made, chat-loving comedy are plenty hideous, prone to feasting on intestines. But they’re mostly fake-blood-splattered interlopers, dispatched with Shaun of the Dead sangfroid. At the bone, Zombieland is a polished, very funny road picture shaped by wisenheimer cable-TV sensibilities and starring four likable actors, each with an influential following.” Lisa SchwarzbaumEntertainment Weekly

★★★★ “No spoilers here, but first things first: Zombieland has the single most outrageously entertaining and unexpected celebrity cameo of any film – genre or otherwise… Storywise, there’s precious little going on here that we haven’t seen before, but Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s archly hip and often downright hilarious script, combined with a quartet of seamless performances and enough cranial destruction to sate even the most diehard Fangoria reader, makes for one hell of a wild ride.” Mark Savlov, Austin Chronicle

“Scattershot but sharp, this post-apocalyptic road comedy gives “Shaun of the Dead” a run for its money.” Cliff Doersksen, Chicago Reader

★★★★“[“Zombieland”] offers a nice line on Columbus’s emotional frigidity and irrational fear of social contact. These disabilities have equipped him with the neurotically alert caution now needed to stay alive: he may have been a bit of a zombie before the apocalypse, but now his humanity has triumphed. A very ridiculous film which is also a treat.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
